Affirmation of Faith
Our confession
CBTS holds to the following affirmation of faith.
The Scripture
The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired, and is God’s revelation of Himself to man. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth for its matter. It is the inerrant Word of God and remains the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds and religious opinions should be tried.
God
There is one and only one true and living God, infinite in holiness and all other perfections, revealed to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, each with distinct personal attributes but without division of nature, essence or being.
God the Son
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He died as a substitute on the cross, was buried, and was raised from the dead with a glorified body. He is now exalted at the right hand of God as the one Mediator, and will come again in power and glory.
God the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God and fully God. He convicts men of sin, effects regeneration, baptises every believer into the Body of Christ, cultivates Christian character, and seals the believer for the day of final redemption.
Man
Man was created by the special act of God, in God’s image, without sin and endowed with freedom of choice. Through Satan’s temptation man fell from his original innocence. Every person of every race possesses full dignity and is worthy of respect and Christian love.
Salvation
Salvation involves the redemption of the whole person and is offered freely to all who put their trust in Jesus Christ. It includes regeneration, justification, sanctification and glorification. Without personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord there is no salvation.
The Church
The universal Church is the entire body of genuine believers in Christ throughout the ages from every tribe, tongue, people and nation. A New Testament church is an autonomous local congregation of baptised believers, operating under the Lordship of Christ through democratic processes.
Baptism and the Lord’s Supper
Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and is the prerequisite for church membership and the Lord’s Supper, which commemorates the love of Christ and anticipates His second coming.
The Lord’s Day
The first day of the week is the Lord’s Day, commemorating the resurrection of Christ, and should include exercises of worship and spiritual devotion, both public and private.
The Kingdom of God
The Kingdom includes both His general sovereignty over the universe and His particular reign over men who acknowledge Him as King. Its full consummation awaits the return of Jesus Christ.
Last Things
Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly in glory. The dead will be raised and Christ will judge all men in righteousness. The righteous will dwell with the Lord forever in Heaven.
Evangelism and Missions
It is the duty of every Christian and of every church to seek to extend the gospel to the ends of the earth and to make disciples of all nations.
Stewardship
God is the source of all blessings. We are under obligation to serve Him with our time, talents and material possessions, contributing cheerfully, regularly and systematically to the advancing of the cause of Christ.
